Advice

The right choice
As you probably know, there are different solutions. Each of these concepts has specific benefits and limitations, as well as applications, which are not interchangeable as such. In addition, the efficiency of these hearing protections are highly dependent on the correct usage and maintenance.

The most important thing is that you start from the noise volume in the work area, which you can measure with an app. The hearing protection has to be able to reduce that volume to an acceptable level. Our PPG are happy to help you select the right hearing protection for you or your employees.

The most well-known and simple form of hearing protection are the disposable ear plugs, which you squeeze between your fingers and insert into your ear. Once inserted, the plug will expand and protect the ear drum.

Dampening: 15-25 dB

These ear plugs have a longer life span. They have a dampening effect of about 20 dB and a built-in filter that keeps damaging noise out, while allowing people to hear the most important sounds. Depending on the application, you can choose a specific filter.

Because each ear canal is different, noise will often ‘leak through’. Made to measure hearing protection (or otoplastics) are completely fitted to your hearing anatomy. They will close the ear canal perfectly and are comfortable as well. In addition, they have a life span of up to six years. This type of hearing protection is also available with built-in filter, allowing you to hear important signals and conversations. It is important to have it tested regularly, because your ear canal can grow.

Ear hoods
Dampening: <25 dB

Hear hoods seal of the entire ear. They are available with various dampening levels and even built-in speakers. The ear hoods are also available in a model that can be fitted onto a helmet, so if you have to wear a helmet, that allows you to wear the hearing protection in the correct manner.

Important aspects of hearing protection:

Comfort
Hearing protection has to be comfortable to wear. In practice, there is not much support for its use, and it is often perceives as being uncomfortable, which is why it is important to include the element of comfortability in your selection criteria.
Maintenance
It is important to secure the quality of hearing protection. It would be a waste if it turned out that the hearing protection wasn’t functioning properly. That is why good maintenance of this PPG is necessary. The hearing protection can be contaminated with ear wax. Poor maintenance can lead to ear infections. In addition, it was affect the effectiveness of the protection. So constant monitoring and cleaning is important. In the case of more expensive hearing protection devices, like otoplastics, you can have them tested.

Legislation and regulations

The basic boundary lies at 80 dB, a volume at which people are allowed to work for 8 hours a day without hearing protection. With each increase of 3 dB, sounds are twice as loud, which means people can work without hearing protection half as long, and the aim of hearing protection has to be to reduce noise levels to below 80 dB.

From 85 dB on, hearing protection is legally obliged, and the work area has to be clearly marked with a sign indicating that hearing protection is mandatory.

In addition, employees have the right to have their hearing tested by an expert.
